Lyndhurst is a gorgeous Gothic Revival mansion overlooking the Hudson River, in Tarrytown, NY. It was designed in 1838. Among its famous occupants were former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt and railroad tycoon Jay Gould. It is also situated in the heart of a huge park.
You can learn more about this historic site here.
When we first went there, ten days ago, we didn’t have the time to visit the entire property, so I’ll get back to it in a later post.
On the other hand, we had the chance to benefit from a sunny day to visit the Rose Garden. Unfortunately it had rained a lot the previous days and some of the roses had been damaged but most of the garden was blooming or about to bloom and the colors were magnificent.
The little garden is organized in circles, with a nice kiosk in the middle of it. A plaque indicates that the Garden Club of Irvington-on-Hudson is taking care of the garden and has restored it in 1968. Apparently, the Garden was not part of the initial mansion but was a later addition.
It wasn’t the best time of the day to take pictures unfortunately, as you can see above, especially since the sun was very bright.
Here are some pictures I took of the roses. I’m afraid I didn’t take the name of each rose – I’m terrible at flower names. I know, it doesn’t help not to note the name :-/
You can click on the following pictures to have a bigger-size view :-)
Can you spot the little critter hiding in the flower below?

We visit early last spring on a drizzly day. We toured the mansion but must by back during nice weather sometime to see the lovely grounds.

It did feel like a place you don’t want to visit in a rush. I felt like taking my time, coming back, to really enjoy it.
There also is such a nice view on the Tappan Zee Bridge!
