Can you believe that we are already in December? I certainly can’t. The past couple of months have been a little rough on my side (more on this later) and to be honest, I am quite okay with 2016 ending soon. But in the meantime, we’re entering a beautiful season so let’s all falalalala together!

A few years ago, I had created an Advent Calendar when I was in New York City, sharing one Christmas-themed picture each day of the Advent. In memory of the Advent calendars of my childhood, I have decided to do it again this year with Austin. If you’d like to know what Austin looks like at Christmas time, stay tuned!

Today, we are going downtown Austin, on Congress Ave, to admire the window of a super cool store: Wild About Music.

They sell everything Austin, music and… cats. Yes, because one of the best parts of the store, it’s its resident cat. Meet Jeffrey!

I really like this store because it has a real local feel, you can find a lot of gifts to bring back from Austin that are original, and of course, if you love music (and cats), it’s a must see!

Oh My Cat! DC’s Cat Cafe “Crumbs & Whiskers” Is Pawsome!

Crumbs & Whiskers Cat Cafe - Washington, DC | Books, Cupcakes, and Cats Chasing Chipmunks

As a cat lover, I’ve often wondered what it was like to go to a cat cafe. After all, these places make plenty of sense: purr therapy is incomparable, and if for some reason you cannot have a cat with you, it’s a great way to spend some time with some. It also either gives a permanent home to some kitties, or the opportunity for them to be featured and to interact with humans that could potentially adopt them.

One did open recently in Paris, but I had left Paris before that happened. Austin should have one by the end of the year. Fortunately, I arrived just in time for the opening of the new Washington DC cat cafe, Crumbs & Whiskers.

I spent an hour around cats (and other humans), petting them, playing with them and just enjoying their presence, while I’m away from my cats (them = cats, not humans ;-).

The concept is simple: you book an hour online, and you can come spend the hour with the kitties. You can also order drinks and some food in the cafe.

There are about 20 cats right now, all can be adopted. If you love cats, you should definitely try it. I know I loved it very much.

Below are some more pictures. You can see additional ones on my cat’s blog, here.

Post-Christmas Fun: Santa and Red Tape, Incandescent Light Bulbs and… Boxing Day

We complain that we are overburdened by regulations that make our lives less easy – and that’s true. You’d imagine that someone like Santa Claus would get special privileges from the “governing” sphere though because, well, because he’s Santa, for goodness’ sake!

Well, you’d be wrong. And right.

Santa and his reindeers have to get all the permits necessary to enter the U.S. territory like everyone else, but we do think the red tape is being reduced a little for him. After all, if someone is used to red tape, that must be Santa (red, green, silver…), so you don’t want to add to it.

Hello Kitty Claus in New York | Books, Cupcakes, and Cats Chasing Chipmunks

Er, this is not Santa, this is Hello Kitty Claus (?!)

If you are still thinking: “what the hell did she drink for Christmas?!”, let me explain.

The US Department of Agriculture issued a permit to Santa so that his reindeers could enter the U.S.:

Breaking news out of Washington, D.C. as the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today issued a movement permit to Mr. S. Claus of the North Pole, a broker with Worldwide Gifts, Unlimited. The permit will allow reindeer to enter and exit the United States between the hours of 6 PM December 24, 2013 and 6 AM December 25, 2013, through or over any northern border port.

“During this season of giving, USDA wants to do everything in its power to help Santa,” said Dr. John R. Clifford, USDA’s Chief Veterinary Officer. “We agreed to waive the normal application fees and entry inspection/overtime costs, provided he winks his eye and wishes port personnel a Merry Christmas at the time of crossing.”

APHIS also waived the normally applicable disease testing requirements, as the North Pole is recognized by APHIS as negligible risk for all livestock diseases and at a recent inspection, the reindeer were found to be healthy and able to prance and paw with each hoof.

Rudolph might avoid being frisked but he still has – per mentioned-regulation – to stick to a special diet of hay, sugar plums, and gingerbread and be microchipped.

But wait, that’s not all. The Federal Administration Aviation also made things a bit more easy for Santa:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today said Santa Claus, his elfin crew and the Santa One sleigh are GO for the annual round-the-world flight that will deliver presents to good boys and girls everywhere.

“This is my first holiday season as Secretary of Transportation, and I feel a special responsibility to make sure Santa’s flight goes off without a hitch,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

While there were no external changes to Santa One this year, FAA inspectors put in many hours ensuring that the sleigh’s systems – and especially its crew – met all applicable regulations.

(…)

“We’re helping Santa fly smarter and faster while making sure he has a safe and successful mission” said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

Finally, not even Santa is free of being spied on surveilled tracked. Yes, you read that right: you can track Santa’s route thanks to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). In fact, “they’ve been tracking Santa since 1955 – they’re veritable professionals at keeping tabs on the big man. From their website, Noradsanta.org, you can follow Santa as he zooms around the globe delivering presents and spreading good cheer.”

Ah!

Well, I hope that Santa stopped at your house and delivered what you expected :-) If you are unsure (!), you can always ask the NSA to check for you.

Not everything went smoothly everywhere. I went to Austin’s Capitol on Monday to take a picture of the Christmas Tree in front of the park.

Christmas Tree in front of Capitol - Austin, TX | Books, Cupcakes, and Cats Chasing Chipmunks

Yes, this is a limo and a Cinderella-like carriage fleeing the scene on your left

No, this is not a magic tree. Obviously, there was a bug in the lightning system. I wonder if those switched-off lights were incandescent light bulbs?

Finally, finally,… have you heard of boxing day? I had not until about a year. I’ll go back to how in a moment.

Nobody knows exactly the origins of Boxing Day, but there are several theories:

The best clue to Boxing Day’s origins can be found in the song “Good King Wenceslas.” According to the Christmas carol, Wenceslas, who was Duke of Bohemia in the early 10th century, was surveying his land on St. Stephen’s Day — Dec. 26 — when he saw a poor man gathering wood in the middle of a snowstorm. Moved, the King gathered up surplus food and wine and carried them through the blizzard to the peasant’s door. The alms-giving tradition has always been closely associated with the Christmas season — hence the canned-food drives and Salvation Army Santas that pepper our neighborhoods during the winter — but King Wenceslas’ good deed came the day after Christmas, when the English poor received most of their charity.

King Wenceslas didn’t start Boxing Day, but the Church of England might have. During Advent, Anglican parishes displayed a box into which churchgoers put their monetary donations. On the day after Christmas, the boxes were broken open and their contents distributed among the poor, thus giving rise to the term Boxing Day. Maybe.

But wait: there’s another possible story about the holiday’s origin. The day after Christmas was also the traditional day on which the aristocracy distributed presents (boxes) to servants and employees — a sort of institutionalized Christmas-bonus party. The servants returned home, opened their boxes and had a second Christmas on what became known as Boxing Day.

Boxing Day is not celebrated in the United States. Well, wait, it is actually, although it is celebrated in a particular way that is not on Wikipedia. It is how I heard of it. Boxing Day is a kitty holiday! Mais bien sûr ! And you can be sure some kitties at my home are celebrating like it’s Christmas all over again!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside (the Box)

Napping that is. Napping inside the box. Of course!

This week’s WordPress Photo Challenge is “inside:”

This week, share what you see on the inside. It could be something literally inside, like these birds in the rebar or the inside of your home or favorite hideaway. If you’d like, go in a personal direction — share a photo of your best friend laughing, showing how she feels on the inside, or an arresting shot of your son’s blue eyes (windows to the soul, dontcha know).

A couple hours after the new challenge was posted, I found Mademoiselle Kitshka in this box. This box has long lost its lid, and it has been partly torn, but the cats love it. It’s a box. It’s like… a treasure. They take turns to nap or play in it.

Here is Mademoiselle Kitshka, napping inside the box.

[Weekly photo challenges will probably often make me break my every-other-day schedule because they are easy to insert and cannot be planned much ahead of time]

Cat Cupcakes for the Most Wonderful Cat in the Whole Wide World

7 years ago today, I adopted a little furball the size of a small Cavaillon melon, only with beautiful white and cream fur and a character that earned him his name.

This is Texas.

What happy moments I had with him during those 7 years! I am eagerly waiting for those to come.

So in his honor today, I have created some cat cupcakes.

Books Cupcakes and Cats Chasing Chipmunks, cat cupcakes, cupcakes, Texas a Cat in New York

I had seen cat cupcakes everywhere, and especially at Catsparella, that runs a Cat Cupcake Tuesday series :-)

I wanted to come up with my own cupcakes though: something new, and that would somehow at least look a little like Texas, my kitty. Of course I quickly forgot the part about making a Texas lookalike of a cupcake!

They were quite easy to make but necessitated some time.

I first made a model for what was going to be on top of each cupcake.

What did I use? I used a simple vanilla cupcake recipe (made with yogurt) so cupcakes were simple and light.

As for the decoration…

I used toothpicks to make the wedges stand.

While the kitties had their own stinky treats, we enjoyed a very sugary treat!
I am so glad of the day you came into my life, Texas!

Start the Week with a Smile: Kitty Egg Oat Bran Galette

29 Monday Apr 2013

breakfast, cats, Dukan, Dukan diet, Dukan galette, food photography, oat bran galette, recipe

Easy as one, two, three + breaks the monotony :-)

If you are following/have been on the Dukan diet, you probably already know about his famous galette. Below is the simple recipe. More on the diet in a later post.

Be productive, have fun along the way, and enjoy the week ahead!

For 1 galette, you will need:
– 2 tbsp oat bran
– 1 tbsp wheat bran
– 1 egg
– 1 tbsp yogurt

Mix all the ingredients together and cook in a pan, a couple of minutes on each side (turn the galette once the mixture is starting to make bubbles on top). Your galette is ready!

I usually prepare those in advance and freeze them. So, to do the above, I defrosted one, used a cookie cutter to make the kitty form, put the galette back in a pan, cracked the egg above the kitty hole and cooked it this way. I had to turn the galette to cook the yolk so that it would not stay raw while the galette would burn on the other side.

Of course, you can use some bread to do that too :-) And you can add some cream cheese on your bread/galette. Look who’s suddenly interested in what I’m doing in the kitchen ;-)

Cat’s Tongue Biscuits and a Happy Birthday to my Little Shrimp

04 Thursday Apr 2013

Tags

cat's tongues, cats, chocolate, food photography, langues de chat, recipe, Texas

What a bizarre title!… I heard that!

For those who are new to this blog, welcome! Also, I am a cat person. I am a cat lover. My husband and I are currently owned by three kitties.

(Like the name of this blog isn’t giving me away…)

Among those three is Texas. When I adopted him, he was so cute and small that I nicknamed him “my little shrimp.”

The little shrimp has grown up to be a beautiful kitty, and is now – today – 7.

Happy Birthday, Texas!

My dear Texas, you’ve been my most loyal, truthful and lovely friend ever. The most furry one too. My black pants know about that ;-) But who cares about black pants when one knows you! I don’t!

In honor of his birthday, I baked something related to kitties: cat’s tongue biscuits or “langues de chat.”

I tried cooking treats for our kitties before, but those were not always a success, so Texas will have his favorite food today and some new toys. You can never have enough nip toys, right? The humans are having cookies.

The “langues de chat” are very easy to bake and only require a little time if you want to put some chocolate on them like I did.

I used and adapted a recipe from the lovely book “La Cuisine des Fées” (“Faeries Cooking”).

For about 100 biscuits (I doubled the proportions from the original recipe, so you can divide in two), you will need:
–For the biscuits–
– 1 stick butter, softened
– 1 cup confectioner’s sugar
– 1 cup flour
– 2 egg whites
– some more butter
–For the chocolate–
– 3.5 oz good chocolate (57% cacao min.)

1. Pre-heat your oven to 400F.

2. Mix the sugar with the butter in a large bowl, until it looks creamy.

3. Add the egg whites. Beat. Sieve the flour and add it slowly to the mixture, while still beating. Mix until the batter is combined.

4. Put the additional butter (1 tbsp will do) in the microwave to melt it. On a cooking sheet, add some parchment paper. Using a brush, put a very thin layer of the melted butter on the parchment paper.

5. Using a pastry bag, create little sticks (about 1 inch long) of batter on your parchment paper.

6. Bake for 5-6 minutes. Let cool on the parchment paper.

Your cat’s tongues or langues de chat are ready to eat if you don’t want to add anything on them.

Now what if you want to add the chocolate? The recipe in the book says you should temper the chocolate. I was a little lazy on that one, I admit, and simply melted the chocolate, but if you want a better looking result, go for tempering!

So once you have either your tempered or melted chocolate, apply a thin layer on the bottom of each “tongue.”

Let the chocolate dry and solidify. Et voilà !

23 PAWS – My Cat is a Socialite & “Dear Sparkle” Book Review

23 Tuesday Oct 2012

23 PAWS, book review, books, cat book, cats, Dear Sparkle, Kitshka, Sparkle, Texas

This is my third participation in 23 PAWS (you can check the first one here and the second one here).

What is 23 PAWS? It is a way for pet lovers who have a blog to “party” (pawty?) online every 23rd of the month, by blogging about pets (their pets, their family’s or friends’ pets). Another reason to blog about your pet ;-) PAWS is also an acronym for “play.adore.wag.scratch.”
Check here to learn more.

~~~
My cat Texas is a socialite. He has his own blog and occasionally, he attends virtual “pawties” on Twitter.
He recently attended a virtual book signing party on Twitter organized by fellow blogger and kitty heroine of his, Sparkle. Sparkle is a beautiful Somali Ladycat and I think my cat Texas is a little in love.
Anyway,back to the twitter pawty, err, party. Sparkle was promoting her book: “Dear Sparkle: Cat-to-Cat Advice from the World’s Foremost Feline Columnist.” She was aso offering to pawtograph the book.
During the party, Texas won a copy of the book and later made a review of the book.
If you want to read my cat’s review, you can follow the link above. I wanted to seize the occasion of 23 PAWS to share with furry friends lovers – especially cat lovers – my human review of the book.
The book is claimed to be written by Sparkle, the beautiful Somali kitty I mentioned above, and clearly it can only have been written by a cat! No human would have the wits and humor that Sparkle demonstrates.
The book is a compilation of letters sent to Sparkle by desperate kitties looking for answers to their problems.
Silly? Not at all! Every human who is owned by a cat should read this book. It is full of witty advice on cat-human relationships and on diverse cat issues, such as cat toys and games, litter box issues or a kitty’s sense of ownership of your stuff. It will enable humans to better understand cats. It will enable YOU to better understand (your) cats.
The book is very well written and a pleasure to read. It is funny and serious at the same time: the last letter of the book to which Sparkle answers is particularly moving and should be read by any human planning to visit a shelter to adopt a kitty. No spoiler here, you should really read the book! You won’t regret it.
The book is also full of beautiful pictures of the author, Sparkle.
If you happen to already love cats, you should definitely get this book. If you aren’t a cat person (yet), you might be surprised to find out that, after reading this book, you’ll want to give it a try. Seriously.
The book also makes a lovely and funny present for the cat lovers you know.
[This book was won through my cat’s blog. Receiving the book and having my cat make me read it did not influence my opinion]
23 PAWS: Learning Naps From The Best
Like any good, respectable cats, ours have been working hard all week as… nap substitutes for their humans who cannot nap during the week and don’t know how to nap during the weekend.
Since cats are nap masters, I want to share a couple of pictures of our cats hard at work nap.
If you feel like taking a nap by now, immediately run toward the bed! If you think you still need some more professional nap advice, you can follow this lesson on the virtues of napping on my cat’s blog.
Wishing you a happy 23 PAWS Sunday. Go check the original 23 PAWS post for links to all those pawticipating, er, I mean participating!
